Values – The compass of our lives
Share
What are values?
Values are fundamental beliefs, attitudes, and standards that guide our thoughts, actions, and decisions. They act like an inner compass that guides us—in both small and large things. Whether consciously or subconsciously, our values influence our relationships, our career choices, our consumer behavior, and our interactions with others.
What values are there?
Values are diverse and often culturally, socially, or individually influenced. Among the most well-known are:
-
honesty
-
respect
-
tolerance
-
Freedom
-
justice
-
Responsibility
-
Trust
-
compassion
-
Willingness to help
-
sustainability
This list is not exhaustive—it changes depending on the context, life stage, or society. While security and order may be paramount in one community, freedom and self-realization may be the focus in another.
Values – meaning for me and society
For me personally, values such as authenticity , responsibility , and empathy are particularly important. They help me make decisions in accordance with my conscience and live a life that feels "right"—even if it's sometimes uncomfortable.
At the societal level, values are the foundation of our coexistence. Without shared values, peaceful coexistence would be virtually impossible. They create trust, promote solidarity, and strengthen social cohesion. Especially in times of crisis, polarization, or social change, it becomes clear how important shared values are for building bridges—not walls.
Why is it important to think about values?
Values aren't static. They change, can be questioned, and redefined. Therefore, it's essential to continually engage with them. Those who are aware of their own values can:
-
communicate and act more clearly
-
Resolve conflicts better
-
make personal and professional decisions more thoughtfully
-
better orient yourself in a complex world
In a world that is changing ever faster, where information and opinions are pouring in, awareness of our values acts as an anchor. It helps us stay grounded and, despite uncertainty, know what we stand for—and what we don't.
Conclusion
Values are more than just buzzwords. They are what binds us together as individuals and as a society. They deserve not just to be mentioned in Sunday speeches, but to be lived, questioned, and cultivated in everyday life.
Because if you know what is really important to you, you can not only stay true to yourself – but also contribute to a better world.
